Mural: Border Ornamentation

This mural represents those architectural and decorative forms which are common to both sides of the Spanish-Portuguese border, an area known as la raya in Spanish. For inspiration, the artist visited the gothic quarter of Valencia de Alcántara and the Jewish quarter in Marvao on many occasions, displaying in this mural the designs that she observed in both locations.

Don’t miss the pointed-arch entrances to the houses and the decoration of the interior tiles. The Order of Alcántara cross is also represented, making clear the importance of this Order and the fact that the majority of villages which form part of the reserve belonged to it.
